History of Soccer

If you are a fan of soccer, then you likely realize it is the most cherished sport around the world.  You also are likely interested in a bit of soccer history.  With that said, let’s get right to soccer history.  The sport began in England in the mid 1800 and was mostly a game for the more fortunate in private schools and clubs.  Today nearly three million children in the United States from ages five to 19 play soccer.

In 1863 the London Football Association was founded and began standardizing the rules of the game throughout Europe.  Other countries such as Italy and Spain became interested in the sport and it began spreading across the country. The first soccer game to be played at the Olympics was in 1900.  In 1904 the FIFA - Federation International de Football Association was formed.  In 1930 the first World Cup was played.

Today the sport is a sport played around the world with every country being involved.  The United States was one of the later countries to jump aboard entering the scene in 1913 forming the Unites State Soccer Federation USSF.  Until recent years however, most Americans preferred watching the game as opposed to playing in the sport.
